Historical political shifts in Argentina and Guatemala

Historical accounts detail two significant political shifts in Latin America. In Argentina, the presidency of Arturo Ilia was overthrown on June 28, 1966. The conspiracy involved the 'blue' faction of the Army, national and foreign bankers, Peronist union bureaucracy, and segments of the press, including the magazines Primera Plana and Confirmado. This event marked the beginning of direct military rule.

In Guatemala, the October Revolution of 1944 ended a 14-year dictatorship. Following the resignation of Jorge Ubico in June 1944 due to public unrest, Federico Ponce Vaides assumed the interim presidency. On October 20, 1944, a civic-military movement launched a revolution involving bombings of military barracks to overthrow the Ponce Vaides administration. The movement was preceded by protests from teachers and women, notably following the death of teacher María Chinchilla.
