Historical residences in Tamsui and Fukuoka face new chapters
The century-old Nakano Residence in Tamsui, Taiwan, has officially opened to the public for free. Originally built as the private home of Japanese businessman Nakano Kintaro during the Japanese colonial period, the three-story brick building later served as a dormitory for a navy shipyard director following World War II. The site features unique architectural details, including rare double-counterweight windows and a private swimming pool added in the post-war era.
In Japan, the historic Kanyoso residence in Fukuoka is facing a preservation crisis. Built in the 1950s, the estate belonged to Kurosuke Uchimoto, a businessman who contributed to Kyushu's power industry. Following the death of Uchimoto's grandson, the land has been sold. A local preservation group, the Kanyoso Club, is currently searching for a new location to relocate the building, as it faces potential demolition if not moved by the end of 2027.
