Historical residential developments in Zaandam and Watergraafsmeer
Historical records detail early 20th-century urban expansion and residential construction in the Netherlands. In Zaandam, a 1939 application by H. G. Scholten originally proposed 58 homes and five shop-houses at Burgemeester ter Laanplantsoen. Following a 1940 revision, four of the shop-houses were converted to residential use, leaving only one shop-house at number 16. This location later housed a milk business operated by Aris Lubbes and Jacoba de Dood.
In Watergraafsmeer, a 1913 application for 12 houses on Middenweg resulted in the construction of only six buildings, known colloquially as Walenburg. Built by the Rotterdam-based Walenburg firm, these residences included notable occupants, such as the writer Nescio, who lived at number 166 between 1926 and 1940. The area also featured a tram stop for the Gooise Stoomtram near number 168.
