Historical sites in Moravian Karst and Slovakia reveal wartime legacies

Recent archaeological and historical findings in Central Europe highlight the intersection of natural landscapes and human conflict. In the Moravian Karst, the Výpustek Cave serves as a site where prehistoric, industrial, and military histories converge. Originally a natural cave, it was significantly altered by phosphate mining in the early 20th century and later used by the Czechoslovak army and Nazi forces for munitions and production. During the Cold War, a secret command post was established deep underground to function in the event of a nuclear attack.

In Slovakia, conservators in Horné Orešany discovered a German Kugelbunker dating to 1945. This type of bunker, designed to protect up to four soldiers from artillery or aerial bombardment, was produced late in World War II. Local accounts suggest the bunker remained in use by residents for recreation until the 1960s. The object will be relocated to a public site near a local monastery, accompanied by an information board detailing its technical history.
