Historical sites in Palencia and Granada highlight Spanish heritage
Brañosera, located in the Montaña Palentina region of Palencia, is recognized as the oldest village in Spain. Founded on October 13, 824, when Count Munio Núñez granted its first town charter, the settlement has a history spanning over 1,200 years. The village, which has fewer than 300 inhabitants, features Romanesque architecture, notably the churches of Santa Eulalia and San Miguel, and is surrounded by natural landmarks such as the Pozo Merino waterfall.
In the Sierra de Baza region of Granada, the abandoned hamlet of El Raposo holds a unique connection to World War I. During the conflict, German workers settled in the area to exploit wulfenite deposits, a mineral used to obtain molybdenum. The mining activity left a lasting architectural imprint on the settlement, which originally grew from a livestock-based community in the 19th century.
