Historical Spanish towns Ribadavia and Petilla de Aragón showcase unique legacies

Spain features several unique historical locations, including the medieval town of Ribadavia and the enclave of Petilla de Aragón.

Ribadavia, located in the Ourense province of Galicia, serves as a major center for the Ribeiro wine denomination. The town has a significant history, having served as the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia between 1065 and 1071. Its heritage includes a Sephardic past, Gothic churches, and a historic castle overlooking the Avia River.

Petilla de Aragón is a small mountain village of 29 inhabitants that exists as a political enclave of Navarre situated entirely within the region of Aragon. This geographical anomaly dates back over 800 years to a debt incurred by King Peter II of Aragon to King Sancho VII of Navarre. The territory was held as collateral for the loan and remains part of Navarre to this day.
