Historical terrorist attacks reshape global security and politics
Historical terrorist attacks have fundamentally reshaped global security, political landscapes, and military strategies. The September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths and prompted the United States to launch the ‘war against terrorism’. This led to military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq and a radical transformation of domestic security policies.
In response to the 9/11 attacks, NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time. The subsequent war in Afghanistan targeted Al Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden, under the dual objectives of dismantling the terrorist organization and promoting democracy. However, the long-term outcomes in the region have been complex, as the attempt to establish a US-dependent democracy faced significant resistance.
Other major incidents, such as the 2004 train bombings in Madrid which killed 193 people, demonstrate how terrorism can directly influence democratic processes and national election results.
