Historical theories of bird migration from the Moon to Africa

Historical theories regarding bird migration once included the idea that birds traveled to the Moon. In the 17th century, Harvard academic Charles Morton proposed that birds migrated to the Moon to explain their disappearance during winter months, suggesting the journey took approximately two months round-trip.

Other historical hypotheses included Aristotle’s theory of species transformation and suggestions of underwater hibernation. The mystery of long-distance migration was largely resolved following an incident in 1822, when a stork was found in a German city with an 80-centimeter arrow through its neck, providing evidence that birds traveled from Africa to Europe.
