Historical Turkish bazaars preserve cultural heritage through commerce

Historical bazaars in Turkey continue to serve as vital centers for both commerce and cultural preservation. In Trabzon, the Kemeraltı Çarşısı, which is approximately 2,500 years old, maintains its economic relevance in the Ortahisar district. According to records from the General Directorate of Foundations, the bazaar contains 180 registered structures, 130 of which are currently used as commercial businesses. The area features historical inns such as Bedesten, Alacahan, Taşhan, and Sabırhan, hosting various trades including jewelry, clothing, and traditional copper crafts.

In Konya, the 5th Historical Bazaars Shopping Days has commenced at the Historical Bedesten Bazaar. The event aims to preserve the city's historical and cultural values through community engagement. The program includes traditional performances by the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mehter Band, antique product markets, and activities for children. Local merchants and visitors have expressed support for the initiative, noting its role in promoting Turkish-Islamic culture.
