History and origins of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

The devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary is a significant tradition within the Catholic Church, deeply connected to the history of the Dominican Order. While some attribute the invention of the Rosary to Saint Dominic de Guzmán, historical accounts suggest the current form of the prayer is the result of a natural evolution of religious piety.

Tradition holds that in 1208, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Dominic to teach him the Rosary as a spiritual tool to combat the Albigensian heresy in southern France. This led to the formation of the Order of Preachers, also known as Dominicans, who spread the devotion globally.

The liturgical celebration of the Feast of the Rosary on October 7 was established through several historical milestones. Pope Pius V issued the bull ‘Salvatoris Domini’ in 1572, which allowed for the establishment of the Rosary Confraternity. Later, Pope Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. The specific date of October 7 was eventually fixed during the liturgical reforms of Pope Pius X in 1913, a date also noted for its connection to the Battle of Lepanto.
