Hitachi develops structured radio wave technology for 3D satellite observation

Hitachi, Ltd. has announced the development of “structured radio wave” technology, a breakthrough designed to enable high-precision 3D imaging from space. Unlike traditional 2D optical or Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery, this technology uses orbital angular momentum to capture height, object shape, and movement.

Hitachi has successfully completed fundamental verification in radio wave chambers and outdoor settings. The company plans to move to dynamic demonstration experiments using aircraft in 2028, with the goal of launching commercial data services via aircraft by 2030. Full-scale satellite-based earth observation business is targeted for around 2035.

The technology aims to address critical needs in disaster monitoring and infrastructure management. By providing 3D data, it can help detect early signs of natural disasters or structural decay in aging infrastructure, such as railways and power grids, allowing for preventative maintenance rather than reactive repairs.
