Hitachi Rail to implement driverless train systems for Copenhagen S-Bane
Hitachi Rail has secured a contract with Denmark’s DSB to implement autonomous support systems for Copenhagen’s S-Bane suburban train network. The project aims to prepare 87 stations for driverless operations through the SuSy support systems program.
The initiative involves a comprehensive digital overhaul, including the installation of data networks, SCADA systems, passenger information infrastructure, advanced CCTV, and maintenance management software. Hitachi Rail will also deploy its AI-powered HMAX platform for intelligent asset management and anomaly detection.
A key technological component is the platform obstacle detection (ODS-P) system. This laser-based technology scans platforms for pedestrians, animals, or objects, transmitting real-time alerts to control centers to trigger safety measures such as halting train movements. The system is designed to integrate with existing signaling infrastructure to reduce safety risks and prevent unnecessary service disruptions.
