Japan anime industry reaches record $28.2 billion in 2025
The Japanese animation industry achieved record-breaking sales of approximately $28.2 billion (4.45 trillion yen) in 2025, marking a 15.8 percent increase from the previous year. According to the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), this growth was driven by strong performance in both domestic and international markets.
Overseas revenue reached approximately $16.1 billion, accounting for 57.1 percent of the total market, while the domestic market grew to $12.1 billion. This trend follows a shift that began in 2020 when international sales first overtook domestic revenue. A significant contributor to this growth was the global success of the film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle,” which grossed roughly $800 million worldwide.
While the broad market includes consumer spending on streaming, merchandise, music, and live events, revenue specifically earned by animation studios also hit a record of $3.2 billion, an 8.4 percent increase. Kazuko Ishikawa, president of the AJA, emphasized the importance of building a sustainable ecosystem for creators to support long-term industry growth.
