Hitachi Vantara commits to net-zero emissions by fiscal year 2040

Hitachi Vantara, a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. specializing in data storage and hybrid cloud management, has announced a strategic plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire global value chain by fiscal year 2040.

The company’s near- and long-term reduction targets have received independent validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming they align with climate models designed to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As part of this roadmap, the company aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 98 percent by fiscal year 2030 compared to 2024 levels. It also targets a 51 percent reduction in Scope 3 emissions per usable petabyte by 2036, with a total 97 percent reduction in Scope 3 emissions by fiscal year 2040.

Simon Ninan, senior vice president of strategy, noted that the commitment addresses growing customer expectations for credible, science-backed climate actions. The initiative also focuses on improving efficiency in data infrastructure, addressing the high energy demands of AI and cooling systems, which can account for up to 40 percent of data center electricity consumption.
