HIV expert warns Nigerians against using oil-based sexual lubricants
Taofeek Adeleye, a Senior Manager for Prevention Programmes at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, has advised Nigerians against using oil-based substances such as palm oil, vegetable oil, honey oil, or balsamic as sexual lubricants, particularly when using condoms.
Speaking in Lagos during a national media training on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) organized by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), Adeleye recommended water-based lubricants as a safer alternative. He also cautioned against using saliva from another person and advised that, if necessary, individuals should use their own saliva.
Adeleye emphasized the importance of using properly fitting condoms to reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. He noted that while PrEP is a vital prevention tool, it does not provide protection against other STIs, making the consistent use of condoms a necessary component of combination prevention.
