HIV infections surge in Indonesia’s Madiun and Tasikmalaya regions

The regional AIDS commissions reported a sharp rise in HIV cases in early 2026. In Kabupaten Madiun, the local AIDS commission (KPAD) recorded 130 new HIV infections from January through July, bringing the cumulative total to 1,354 HIV cases and 294 AIDS cases. Of the 1,648 persons ever assisted, 888 remain alive while 760 have died. The highest numbers continue to be reported in the Jiwan district, though new cases are shifting toward Saradan, Pilangkenceng and Kare. Heterosexual transmission accounts for roughly 47% of cases, but the community of men who have sex with men (LSL) now shows the highest case count within the regency.

In Kota Tasikmalaya, the city health department identified 88 new HIV infections between January and June 2026, raising the cumulative count since 2004 to 1,595. The surge is driven mainly by men in the productive‑age groups, particularly those aged 21‑30, with the LSL risk factor dominant. The four districts with the most cases are Tawang, Cipedes, Cihideung and Kawalu. Local officials stress the importance of expanding screening and ensuring continuous antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS.
