HIV/AIDS advocacy groups in Brazil support Lula reelection
The National Articulation of the Fight Against AIDS (Anaids), a coalition of 17 state forums and national collectives, has declared support for the reelection of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the upcoming presidential election. This follows a similar announcement by the Brazilian Interdisciplinary Association of AIDS (ABIA).
Both organizations emphasize the importance of maintaining public health policies regarding HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment. While acknowledging that the current administration has restored dialogue with social movements, the groups are calling for increased funding, more consistent responses to address inequalities, and the strengthening of the Unified Health System (SUS).
The advocacy groups expressed concern regarding the potential victory of Flávio Bolsonaro, noting that the political projects of the candidates differ significantly regarding science, human rights, and social participation. Health professionals have also joined the discussion, highlighting that political decisions directly impact access to care for vulnerable populations, including the LGBTQIA+ community.
