HIVE Digital Technologies expands Paraguay capacity and tests remote AI compute

HIVE Digital Technologies has commenced a 100 MW expansion at its Yguazú campus in Paraguay, aiming to increase its renewable power capacity in the country to 400 MW. The project utilizes hydroelectric power from the Itaipú Dam and is targeted for completion during 2026.

In a related development, HIVE partnered with Columbia University’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research to test long-distance AI training. Researchers in New York remotely accessed a cluster of Nvidia A40 GPUs located in Asunción, Paraguay, via fiber optic connections spanning approximately 5,000 miles.

The collaboration, which ran from March to June 2026, demonstrated that the hardware could deliver performance comparable to Nvidia’s H100 chips under specific pre-training workloads for large language models. The project highlights HIVE’s strategic shift toward combining Bitcoin mining with high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
