Hjorth & Thorsson to release Icelandic thriller ‘De slapende vulkaan’

The Swedish-Icelandic writing duo Michael Hjorth and Bjarni Thorsson will release the Dutch translation of their Scandi-thriller, ‘De slapende vulkaan’ (original title: ‘Våldets ö’), on September 1, 2026. Published by HarperCollins, the book serves as the first installment in a new crime series set in Iceland.

The plot follows police officer Helga as she investigates a brutal murder near Reykjavik and the disappearance of a ten-year-old boy. Assisted by Bjarki, a member of an elite rescue team, Helga searches the volcanic cave landscapes for the child while discovering a pattern of murders targeting single mothers, suggesting the presence of a ruthless serial killer.
