Hjørring Municipality faces new coastal protection funding criteria
Hjørring Municipality is facing significant challenges due to coastal erosion, where waves are gradually wearing away cliffs and reducing the municipality's land area. Søren Homann, chairman of the Technical and Environmental Committee, has expressed both satisfaction and concern regarding a new political agreement on coastal protection.
The agreement changes how the state evaluates applications for coastal protection funding. Future support will place greater emphasis on nature, the environment, and biodiversity. Consequently, municipalities may face rejections if their projects do not sufficiently account for natural ecosystems.
To combat erosion, Hjørring Municipality utilizes methods such as sand nourishment, which involves adding sand to beaches to maintain natural dynamics, rather than relying solely on hard coastal protection like granite stones.
