Da Vinci robotic surgery systems adopted by hospitals across Spain and beyond
Spanish private hospital groups have expanded their use of the Da Vinci surgical robot. The HLA health network in Andalusia integrated three new Da Vinci systems, bringing its total to four robotic platforms at the Inmaculada, Mediterráneo, Jerez Puerta del Sur and El Ángel hospitals. Vithas Vigo in Galicia became the only private Galician centre to perform high‑complexity colorectal cancer resections, transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) and pelvic‑floor repairs with Da Vinci, supported by four digestive surgeons, three of whom specialize in coloproctology. Quirónsalud Badajoz promoted Da Vinci robotic surgery for precise, minimally invasive procedures, while Clínica Rotger and Hospital Quirónsalud Palmaplanas in the Balearic Islands announced a private robotic surgery platform that integrates Da Vinci with advanced PET‑TC imaging for oncology cases.
In the United States, Cleveland Clinic performed the country's first robot‑assisted lung transplant using Da Vinci, reporting reduced postoperative pain and a faster recovery for a 70‑year‑old patient with pulmonary fibrosis. In Argentina, urologist Dr Fernando Mías highlighted the clinical benefits of laparoscopic and robotic surgery for urological cancers, noting that high equipment costs and limited insurance coverage hinder broader access.
These developments illustrate a growing global trend toward robotic assistance in complex surgeries, aiming to improve precision, reduce invasiveness and shorten patient recovery times.
