Hélio Oiticica's 'Magic Square #3' Debuts Outdoors at Goodwood Art Foundation in England
The Goodwood Art Foundation near Chichester, West Sussex, opened the first outdoor installation in Europe of Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica on 31 July 2026. The work, titled “Magic Square #3,” is a labyrinthine composition of vivid colour panels built from a painted cement wall, bricks, metal, glass and marble fragments. It is presented on a long‑term loan with no set end date. Foundation director Richard Grindy described the piece as “extraordinary,” noting that it embodies Oiticica’s vision of participatory, inclusive art that changes with natural light. Oiticica, who died in 1980, is regarded as one of Brazil’s most important 20th‑century artists, known for works that invite viewers to move through and experience them. The installation was reconstructed for this debut, echoing its original 1978 realization.
