HM Hospitales implements magnetic marking for breast cancer surgery

HM Hospitales has introduced magnetic marking technology in Málaga to improve breast cancer surgery. The procedure utilizes superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles to locate the sentinel lymph node in patients.

This technique serves as a safe and effective alternative to the traditional use of radioisotopes. While radioisotopes are highly effective, they require complex logistics, inter-departmental coordination, and strict protocols for handling radioactive material. The magnetic marking system allows surgeons to identify the sentinel lymph node using a high-sensitivity magnetic probe, achieving detection rates comparable to conventional methods.

The technology is available in two forms: a liquid superparamagnetic contrast agent made of bioabsorbable materials that eliminates radiation exposure, and superparamagnetic seeds. Accurate identification of the sentinel lymph node is critical for determining if the disease has spread to the lymph nodes, helping to tailor treatment and avoid overly aggressive surgeries.
