HMCS Corner Brook Sinks USS Mobile Bay in RIMPAC Exercise

A Victoria‑class Royal Canadian Navy submarine, HMCS Corner Brook, delivered the decisive Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo strike that sank the decommissioned US guided‑missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay during a live‑fire SINKEX on 12 July 2026. The sinking took place off the northern coast of Kauai, Hawaii, in water about 15,000 feet deep and more than 50 nautical miles from shore.

The exercise was part of the multinational Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 drills, which involved ships, submarines and aircraft from Canada, the United States, Australia, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Spain. It marked the first participation of a Canadian submarine in RIMPAC since 2014 and demonstrated the upgraded electronic‑warfare and precision‑strike capabilities of the Canadian fleet.
