HMM invests $1.62 billion in 12 new container ships

South Korean container carrier HMM has announced a major investment of approximately 2.1 trillion won (roughly $1.62 billion) to expand its fleet by 12 vessels. This move is part of the company’s ‘2030 Mid-to-Long-Term Strategy’ to bolster capacity and competitiveness.

The investment includes a contract with HD Hyundai to build eight 13,000-TEU container ships. These vessels will feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion systems to meet international environmental regulations, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 23% compared to conventional fuels. Construction will be split between HD Hyundai Samho, which will build six ships, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which will build two. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2029, with the ships primarily serving the Far East-India-Mediterranean (FIM) route.

Additionally, HMM will acquire four feeder vessels (three 2,800-TEU and one 1,700-TEU) through resale agreements to strengthen its ‘hub and spoke’ network. This strategy aims to connect major ports with regional hubs. With this latest deal, HMM’s total investment for the year has exceeded 6 trillion won, bringing the cumulative investment under CEO Choi Won-hyuk to 12 trillion won since March 2025.
