HMRC urges taxpayers to meet July 31 Self‑Assessment payment deadline
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is reminding millions of Self‑Assessment taxpayers to prepare for the second ‘payments on account’ deadline on 31 July for the 2025‑2026 tax year. The payments, each equal to half of the tax owed in the previous year, are due at midnight on 31 July (the first instalment is due 31 January). HMRC advises using the HMRC app or GOV.UK to make payments, set up weekly or monthly payment plans, and track payment history. Taxpayers can also file their Self‑Assessment returns early, with the final filing and any remaining tax due by 31 January 2027.
From mid‑July 2026, about 300,000 Self‑Assessment customers will have Child Benefit information pre‑populated on their returns, and sole traders or landlords with turnover above £50,000 must use Making Tax Digital to submit quarterly updates. New users of HMRC digital services are required to create a GOV.UK One Login, while existing users continue with Government Gateway.
HMRC emphasizes that support is available for those who find managing their tax bill difficult, encouraging the use of digital tools and payment plans to spread the cost.
