HMS Queen Elizabeth deploys as NATO command ship
The United Kingdom has deployed the 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth for a three-month mission focused on enhancing NATO's collective security and deterrence in Northern Europe.
Serving as a command platform for the Allied Response Force, the vessel and its crew of over 800 sailors will conduct intensive training in modern naval warfare. This deployment marks the first time a Queen Elizabeth-class ship has assumed this specific NATO command role. The mission aims to test the ability of multinational forces to coordinate communications, command, and rapid response during potential crises.
The deployment coincides with a £240 million investment in new drone technology designed to create a Hybrid Carrier Air Wing, intended to operate alongside F-35 fighter jets. This training program is part of a long-term readiness strategy, preparing the carrier to eventually succeed HMS Prince of Wales as the Royal Navy’s high-readiness flagship in 2027.
