HMWSSB implements water wastage fines and resolves tanker strike
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has implemented stricter enforcement measures to combat drinking water wastage, with fines now reaching up to ₹20,000 for serious violations. During recent surprise inspections in Jubilee Hills, officials penalized five consumers for wasteful practices. Violations include using drinking water to wash floors or vehicles, leaving taps running, and failing to monitor overflowing tanks. While fines start at ₹1,000, repeat offenders face the potential disconnection of their water services.
Simultaneously, HMWSSB tanker operators have withdrawn a planned strike following assurances from Managing Director K Ashok Reddy. The operators had sought a revision of existing tanker rates due to rising operating costs. Reddy has committed to presenting the rate revision proposal at the next Board meeting and bringing the matter to the attention of the government. This resolution ensures that drinking water supplies via tankers will continue without disruption while the official review process proceeds.
