Regional theatres launch new seasons and festivals across the Balkans

Multiple regional theatres across the Balkans are launching new artistic seasons and hosting major festivals.

HNK Split has announced a diverse repertoire for the 2026/2027 season, featuring ten premieres including “Pas, žena, muškarac” and the ballet “Grk Zorba.” The season emphasizes co-productions, such as the opera “Carmen” with HNK Zagreb, to facilitate artistic exchange and production efficiency.

In Montenegro, the Boško Buha Theatre is opening its season on September 20 with the production “Palčica,” followed by “Ubistvo u Orijent ekspresu.” Meanwhile, the Montenegrin National Theatre is preparing the premiere of “Crnojevići,” a play exploring the historical Crnojević dynasty.

Podgorica’s Gradsko pozorište is marking a historic milestone by opening its new permanent home with the premiere of “Krađa, prekrađa i nekrađa.” This move follows a 75-year wait for a dedicated venue.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the 25th Festival of Bosnian-Herzegovinian Drama in Zenica continues its program. Notable performances include “Za život cijeli,” which explores the history of FK Željezničar, and “Gorocvet” from the Bora Stanković Theatre. Additionally, the National Theatre in Sarajevo is scheduled to perform “O medvjedima i ljudima.”

Other regional highlights include the “Vitez 2026” theatre days and the new season at Gavella, which focuses on themes of human existence through works by Dostoevsky and O’Neill.
