HNK Split premieres ballet Zorba the Greek

The Croatian National Theatre (HNK) in Split has premiered the ballet ‘Zorba the Greek,’ directed, choreographed, and dramatized by Staša Zurovac. The production features the music of Mikis Theodorakis, performed by the HNK Split Opera Orchestra and Choir under the direction of Mikhail Sinkevich.

Critical reception of the production has been largely negative regarding the choreography and direction. Reviewers described the performance as lacking Mediterranean temperament and storytelling, noting a repetitive use of suitcases on a stage covered in artificial sand. While the choreography was criticized for being uninspired and slow, the musical performances by the orchestra, choir, and soloists, such as mezzo-soprano Bjanka Ivas, were highly praised for their professional quality and emotional power.
