Ho Chi Minh City announces 142 trillion VND flood prevention plan

Ho Chi Minh City is implementing a large-scale flood mitigation strategy to address recurring tidal flooding and heavy rainfall. The city has announced a plan for the 2026-2030 period, which includes the deployment of 87 projects with a total investment exceeding 142,000 billion VND. These projects aim to resolve flooding at 50 key locations, prioritizing densely populated areas, industrial zones, and major transport routes.

In the immediate term, the city is focusing on the 10,000 billion VND tidal flood control project, which is expected to become operational in November 2026. This project includes six major tidal control sluices: Ben Nghe, Tan Thuan, Phu Xuan, Muong Chuoi, Cay Kho, and Phu Dinh.

Authorities have also issued directives for 24/7 emergency readiness due to forecasts of high tides and storms. Tide levels at the Phu An station are projected to reach 1.70 to 1.75 meters, exceeding alarm level 3. To manage these risks, the city is also allocating over 840 billion VND to environmental protection and waste management tasks for 2026.
