Ho Chi Minh City faces flooding challenges and rising food prices

Ho Chi Minh City is facing significant challenges due to heavy rainfall, extreme weather, and urban flooding, which are impacting both infrastructure planning and food prices. To combat chronic flooding caused by land subsidence, high concrete density, and clogged drainage systems, city officials are shifting toward a new urban planning strategy. This approach focuses on integrating water retention and drainage management within 23 distinct hydrological basins rather than simply building higher roads or dikes.

The heavy rains have also disrupted agricultural supply chains. Prolonged rainfall in key growing regions such as Lam Dong and Southeast Vietnam has led to reduced vegetable yields and increased transportation costs. At Nguyen Tri Phuong Market, prices for essential items have risen sharply; for example, tomatoes have doubled from 20,000 VND to 40,000 VND per kg, and certain leafy greens from Da Lat have increased from 25,000 VND to 50,000 VND per kg. Market authorities have urged traders to avoid abnormal price hikes while acknowledging the supply-side volatility.
