Ho Chi Minh City intensifies IUU fishing enforcement

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are intensifying enforcement efforts to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. A delegation from the Ministry of National Defence’s Steering Committee recently conducted inspections in the city to evaluate current measures and address outstanding issues.

This initiative is part of a month-long nationwide campaign launched on August 15. The primary objective is to strengthen law enforcement and demonstrate comprehensive inter-agency coordination to encourage the European Commission to lift its “yellow card” warning on Vietnamese seafood exports.

Colonel Bui Yen Tinh, Deputy Director General of the Department of Operations under the Ministry of National Defence, noted that the inspections represent a shift toward inter-agency law enforcement rather than relying solely on administrative monitoring. The findings from these inspections will contribute to a comprehensive report due by the end of September, which will be submitted to the European Commission in early October to facilitate a potential on-site inspection.
