Ho Chi Minh City officials cull pigs due to African swine fever

Authorities in Xuan Son commune, located in a major livestock farming area in eastern Ho Chi Minh City, have responded to an outbreak of African swine fever. On August 22, local officials and specialized forces culled a herd of 62 pigs from a household in Tan Xuan hamlet after testing confirmed the presence of the virus.

This marks the second outbreak of African swine fever recorded in Xuan Son commune since the beginning of 2026. The Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City warned that fluctuating weather conditions, characterized by alternating rain and sun, may facilitate the spread of various diseases.

Local veterinary authorities have advised farmers to immediately report any abnormal symptoms in pigs, such as high fever, loss of appetite, or unexplained death, to local government or veterinary officers. Farmers are urged to strictly follow biosecurity measures, including regular disinfection of facilities, proper waste management, and avoiding the trade or transport of pigs from unknown origins.
