Ho Chi Minh City police investigate 'Journey to the West' funeral procession

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating a viral video showing four individuals dressed as characters from 'Journey to the West'—Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing—walking and riding a white horse in a lane reserved for motor vehicles on Phan Van Khai Street.

Local police in Tan An Hoi commune clarified that the group was not attempting to create social media content for views. Instead, the procession was a funeral arrangement organized to fulfill the final wishes of the deceased. Despite the sentimental intent, officials noted that moving a procession with a horse through a high-traffic area containing trucks and containers violated traffic safety regulations.

Law enforcement has summoned the involved parties for questioning and is processing the case according to law. Authorities have issued a recommendation for citizens to choose appropriate routes and coordinate with officials when organizing spiritual or family events on public roads to ensure safety.
