Meningococcal disease outbreak at Hai Ba Trung Secondary School in Ho Chi Minh City

Health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have reported a cluster of Group B meningococcal disease cases at Hai Ba Trung Secondary School in Hiep Phuoc. A total of four students have tested positive for the infection. One student died on October 14 due to rapid progression involving septic shock and multi-organ failure. Two other students are currently receiving medical treatment, while a fourth student, a 12-year-old male, was diagnosed on October 16 and is also co-infected with Influenza B.

The Ministry of Health and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health have initiated emergency response measures, including epidemiological investigations, environmental disinfection at the school, and the administration of prophylactic antibiotics to identified close contacts. Health officials have advised those in close contact with the patients to monitor their health closely for 10 days, specifically watching for symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, stiff neck, or skin rashes.

In response to the outbreak, there has been a significant surge in vaccination demand. The Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City reported an eightfold increase in vaccine uptake on October 17, and VNVC vaccination centers saw a fourfold increase in consultations. Medical experts warn that meningococcal disease can progress extremely quickly, potentially leading to death within 24 to 48 hours if not treated promptly.
