Ho Quy Ly introduced mathematics to Vietnamese exams

Historical records indicate that Ho Quy Ly was the first ruler to introduce mathematics into the Vietnamese imperial examination system. Known for his various administrative and social reforms, Ho Quy Ly modified examination methods as early as 1396, prior to his ascension to the throne.

While traditional examinations focused heavily on Confucian classics, Ho Quy Ly introduced additional testing in calligraphy and mathematics. By 1404, under the Ho Dynasty, these regulations were further solidified. This shift was noted by the National Museum of History as a pragmatic reform intended to ensure that successful candidates possessed practical knowledge useful for governance and daily life.

Earlier foundations of the Vietnamese examination system were established during the Ly Dynasty, including the construction of the Temple of Literature in 1070 and the establishment of the Quoc Tu Giam in 1076. The first Confucian examination, Minh kinh bac hoc, was held in 1075, with Le Van Thinh recorded as the first top scholar.
