Ho Teaching Hospital to receive new cardiology centre by 2027
President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive to establish a cardiology centre at the Ho Teaching Hospital by 2027. The project, funded through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, aims to expand specialist heart care beyond the capital, providing alternatives for patients in the Volta Region who currently travel to Accra for treatment.
In addition to the Ho facility, the directive includes the establishment of a cardiology centre at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital to serve the western corridor of the country. While budgetary provisions have been made for these projects, construction is contingent upon parliamentary approval.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to improve national health infrastructure and achieve universal health coverage. Other planned developments include the installation of diagnostic equipment in Cape Coast and Winneba, a $10 million partnership to build a diagnostic centre at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and the establishment of oncology centres at Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, and Tamale Teaching Hospitals.
