Hoang Anh Gia Lai faces losses in pig farming business
Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) is facing significant financial challenges in its pig farming division, which utilizes banana byproducts as feed. According to HAGL's consolidated financial report for the second quarter of 2026, pig sales revenue for the first six months reached approximately 92.2 billion VND, while the cost of goods sold was 122.2 billion VND, resulting in a gross loss of about 30 billion VND.
The decline is part of a broader trend. In 2025, pig sales revenue fell by approximately 79% compared to 2024, dropping to 209 billion VND against a cost of 371 billion VND. This led to a gross loss of roughly 162 billion VND for that year. Consumption volume also saw a sharp decrease from 181,400 pigs in 2024 to 72,231 in 2025.
HAGL attributes these difficulties to high feed prices, the complex developments of African Swine Fever, and competition from imported pork. Consequently, the company has adopted a cautious approach, focusing on rebuilding herds rather than expanding facilities. Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc noted that while the company is rebuilding its pig population, the process requires time due to the 1.5-year breeding cycle.
