Hoang Anh Gia Lai shifts agricultural strategy over 15 years
Over the past 15 years, Doan Nguyen Duc and his company, Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), have undergone a continuous strategic shift in their agricultural operations. After transitioning from real estate to large-scale industrial agriculture, the company initially focused heavily on rubber, completing 50,000 hectares by 2012 across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
However, the long harvest cycles of rubber led HAGL to diversify into products with shorter turnover rates. This evolution included expanding into sugarcane production in Attapeu, Laos, as well as investing in bananas, pigs, durian, and beef cattle. Most recently, the company has included coffee in its agricultural portfolio as it continues to search for sustainable growth models.
