Hobart Hurricanes sign Chamari Athapaththu for WBBL 12
The Hobart Hurricanes have signed Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu as an overseas replacement player for the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL 12). Athapaththu joins the squad following the injury of England international Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who was the club's leading run-scorer and Player of the Year during their previous title-winning campaign.
Athapaththu, currently ranked sixth in the ICC Women's T20I batting rankings, brings extensive WBBL experience, having played seven previous seasons for the Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Thunder. During her WBBL 09 campaign with the Thunder, she was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 552 runs.
In addition to the overseas signing, the club has awarded a contract to wicketkeeper-batter Kate Pelle following her performance in the Spring Challenge.
