Hobbs, New Mexico, teacher shot by 13-year-old student

A 13-year-old boy is in custody following the shooting of a middle school teacher at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, New Mexico. The victim, Kelly Matthews, was wounded on Friday near the school’s back doors and remains in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

According to Hobbs Police Chief James Jones, the suspect encountered Matthews outside the building between classes and allegedly began firing immediately. Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun believed to be the weapon used in the incident. While a motive has not been disclosed, authorities stated there is no evidence suggesting Matthews was specifically targeted.

The suspect fled toward a residential area but was apprehended by officers following a brief foot pursuit. He faces charges including aggravated assault on school personnel, shooting threats, and unlawfully carrying a deadly weapon. In response to the event, the Hobbs Police Department is increasing its presence at local schools.
