Hochul and Blakeman clash in New York gubernatorial debate
Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican nominee Bruce Blakeman engaged in a televised debate ahead of the New York gubernatorial election. The candidates clashed on several high-profile issues, including immigration, antisemitism, and public safety.
Blakeman criticized Hochul’s policies regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically addressing a recent shooting of a Dominican national in the Bronx. He argued that Hochul’s sanctuary state policies hinder cooperation with federal law enforcement, whereas he has maintained cooperative agreements with ICE in Nassau County to remove migrants with criminal records.
During the debate, Blakeman also accused Hochul of failing to protect Jewish New Yorkers and criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, labeling him an “antisemite” for his executive orders regarding the definition of antisemitism. Hochul’s campaign responded by stating that protecting the state’s large Jewish population from antisemitic attacks remains a critical priority for her administration.
