Hockey India rewards women's team for historic World Cup finish

Hockey India has announced a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh for the Indian women’s hockey team following their fifth-place finish at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 in Belgium and the Netherlands. This marks the team's best performance at the tournament in 52 years, since the inaugural edition in 1974.

Led by captain Salima Tete and Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne, the squad secured the fifth-place position after a 3-1 victory over fifth-ranked Germany in Amstelveen. Throughout the campaign, India suffered only one defeat, against the Netherlands, while recording a 6-1 win over South Africa and holding higher-ranked sides China, England, and Australia to draws.

The financial reward will be distributed among the squad and support staff, with each player receiving Rs 2 lakh and support staff members receiving Rs 1 lakh. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey described the result as “historic,” noting that the achievement is a testament to the team's resilience and fighting spirit.
