Hodonín Gymnasium student sues over exam review, court flags procedural flaws

A student from Hodonín Gymnasium challenged the results of her Czech language and social studies maturity exams, alleging procedural irregularities. After the regional office in Brno confirmed the original grades, the student filed a lawsuit. The Brno Regional Court (case no. 29 A 121/2024) criticised the office for allowing members of the exam commission to amend their statements in the protocol after it had been written, a practice that "deviates markedly from the legal procedure for recording testimony". The court noted that the amendments were made by the commission members themselves, not by the office, and found no illegal decision, but highlighted the risk that such changes could undermine the reliability of the statements. The judgment also reiterated that administrative law applies to maturity exam reviews despite the school law’s formal exclusion. The case underscores systemic issues in the handling of exam reviews and the timing of decisions by regional authorities.
