Hofor warns of potential water shortages in Copenhagen

Utility company Hofor has expressed concerns regarding potential water shortages in the Copenhagen metropolitan area following a summer where water reservoir levels reached record lows. Anne Scherfig, a regional manager at Hofor, has called for an accelerated process to secure new drinking water boreholes to meet the demands of a growing urban population. Currently, the process for obtaining permits for new water extraction can take more than ten years due to regulatory and approval requirements.

Environment Minister Maria Reumert Gjerding stated that the ministry is exploring ways to simplify the navigation of new water drilling permits for municipalities, while emphasizing that environmental assessments must remain a priority to protect nature.

In Broager, local water utility officials are highlighting the importance of protecting groundwater quality from chemical runoff and aging infrastructure. Concerns have been raised regarding how pesticides and household chemicals can seep into the groundwater through old sewage pipes and surface water systems, potentially impacting the long-term safety of the local water supply.
