Hofstra University faculty avert strike through contract extension
Hofstra University and its faculty union, the Hofstra University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), have agreed to extend their collective bargaining agreement through Friday, Sept. 4. This extension follows a period of tension where a faculty strike was authorized after negotiations failed to reach a new contract before the original Aug. 31 expiration date.
Both parties reported making meaningful progress over the weekend, allowing faculty members to continue teaching as the fall semester begins. The union has been seeking higher salaries and improved benefits, citing the high cost of living on Long Island and the need to retain professors. Key points of contention included wage increases and healthcare costs.
Anthony Basile, president of the Hofstra AAUP, stated that the extension provides the best path toward a fair agreement. The university administration expressed a commitment to reaching a deal that is both fair to faculty and financially sustainable for the institution.
