Hofvijver event highlights Dutch democratic history

During the Prinsjesfestival on September 12, an event at the Hofvijver in The Hague will highlight a lesser-known chapter of Dutch democratic history. The focus is on Johannes Conradus de Kock, an attorney and resistance figure who played a role in the struggle for freedom and democracy as early as 1787.

De Kock advocated for freedom of the press and freedom of expression. Following the Prussian invasion, he fled to France, where he was executed by guillotine in 1794 during the French Revolution at the age of 38. The launch of the story ‘De Rode Vlinder – Het geheim van Johannes & Nederland’ aims to bring his legacy to light.

The project is based on research by Joost Rosendaal of Radboud University and is presented by public historian Tonny van de Wiel. To make the history accessible, the event includes cartoon booklets by Bob Leenders, a poster series, and interactive activities such as a memory game and the opportunity to sign a modern ‘Akte van Verbintenis’ with a quill.
