Hohe Landesschule Hanau students design sponge city school model

Students at the Hohe Landesschule Hanau (HOLA) have utilized the construction game Luanti to virtually redesign their school grounds using the ‘sponge city’ concept. The project, led by Luisa Fechner from the Deutsche Gesellschaft and Wolfram Schroff from the Berlin Rainwater Agency, aims to manage heavy rainfall by encouraging water to seep into the ground rather than overloading sewage systems.

Through the workshop, thirty students from class 10B proposed various measures to combat heat, drought, and heavy rain, including green roofs, facade greenery, and unsealed surfaces. The initiative was supported by funding from the German Postcode Lottery.

Additionally, the Hohe Landesschule Hanau has announced an open house event scheduled for October 24, 2026. The event will allow prospective students, parents, and families to explore the school’s various academic profiles, including European multilingualism, sports, theater, and informatics.
