Hohes Venn wildfire threatens Monschau as evacuations begin FAST-MOVING

A massive wildfire in the Hohes Venn nature reserve, spanning approximately 2,700 hectares in Belgium, is threatening residential areas near the German border. The fire has approached buildings in the German districts of Ruitzhof and Geisberg in Monschau, prompting the evacuation of roughly 30 residents from 17 homes. Emergency services from both Belgium and Germany are engaged in firefighting efforts, utilizing water tanks and wetting surrounding meadows to create barriers against the flames.

Beyond the immediate threat of fire, authorities have issued warnings regarding the health risks posed by wildfire smoke. The city of Monschau advised residents to leave their homes to avoid inhaling fine dust particles (PM2.5). Health organizations, including the WHO and the German Federal Environment Agency, note that such particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, potentially causing respiratory irritation, inflammation, and long-term issues such as cardiovascular disease, dementia, and type II diabetes.
